Spolia refers to the reuse of existing architectural or sculptural elements in new contexts and structures. The Romans used spolia in their constructions since this practice was a way to showcase power, reuse valuable materials, and often to connect the new structure with the glory and significance of the past.
In my degree project, I have worked with repurposing spoliated fragments collected from buildings currently being demolished in Stockholm. My project aims to demonstrate an approach and practice on how to preserve these types of architectural fragments. To create one thing from another, is to me a celebration of honest adaptation. It is a fair starting point, as opposed to the impossible attempt to create some-thing from no-thing. These types of objects, materials and fragments hold significance and deserve to be included in the enrichment of cultural and historical meaning, as the demolished structures are also a part of our heritage.
