I call my land, this line “Timeline”, not because we call it so, (we call it Plane) but to make its nature clearer for you, my happy visitors, who are privileged to live in it (in Time). Imagine a vast stretch of canvas in which Straight Lines, Triangles, Squares, Pentagons, Hexagons, and other figures, instead of remaining fixed in place, move freely about, on or about the surface, but without the power to rise above, where you find yourself sitting now, or sink below, entering the space behind your screen by your knees, very much like shadows -although also with shadows within the shadows, and in different colours – and you will then have a pretty correct notion of my country and my countrymen. Alas, a few years ago, I should have said “universe” but now my mind has been opened to higher views of things.

This text is a reinterpretation of the introduction of “Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions” by A Square (Edwin Abbott Abbott), 1884.
