The mall in Eskilstuna is undergoing changes in line with the transformational journey that downtown commerce is facing today. Must a mall be dedicated solely to consumption? Like many cities, Eskilstuna is affected by the changes in commerce, leaving the city deserted.
Retuna, situated outside Eskilstuna, collaborates with the nearby recycling centre, specialising in up-cycling and repurposing discarded items. The recycling centre is running out of space due to waste from the construction industry.
Smedjan is a proposal where parts of Retuna’s activities are established in the mall. My degree project aims to revive the city centre of Eskilstuna and activate the mall by prioritising social sustainability over commerce. Workshops take place in an environment where materials from the recycling centre are used both in the interior and as primary materials for workshops. Smedjan is a maker space contributing to a more vibrant mall for Eskilstuna.
