Decoration, pattern, frill, scribble, embellishment, knick-knack – the beloved child has many names. Ornament, with its multitude of expressions and forms, can be almost daunting to use as there are preconceived opinions and values about its meaning, shape, and function.
My degree project explores the connection between graffiti and textile handicrafts. Seen as separate art forms, they are explored here as modern, often overlooked ornaments.
Södergården’s Hemgård in Stockholm is a gathering point for crafts and cultural cohesion. In collaboration with their operations, my degree project focuses on showing how ornament, including lace, knitting and also graffiti, can bring people together. It also examines how place and context play an important role. The project aims to give these art styles new life and understanding by exploring their role both historically and in the present, giving a perspective on the role of handicraft in the design profession.
